The hanbo is 4ft staff/pole, made of either wood, strong plastic or a light metal.
Techniques are taught in striking, parrying, performing locks, holds and takedowns.

Unlike other martial arts that teach spectacular kata and fancy moves with this long stick, this weapon is actualy very basic and by using the nine derectional blocking and striking method you would basicaly be able to fend off many variations of attack from a would be assailant

The hanbo is probably the nearest one can come to sword-fighting, without having a cutting edged weapon. The stances, footwork and body movement are the bases for sword training.
